Ein Rückblick auf die Berlinale 2014 (II)

In Rudolstadt gibt es zahlreiche Stätten, die an Friedrich Schiller erinnern. In dem ehemaligen Lengefeldschen Haus (Schillerstrasse 25) begegnete der Dichter am 6. Dezember 1787 zum ersten Mal seiner späteren Frau Charlotte. 1788 war er hier während eines ausgedehnten Sommeraufenthaltes in Volkstedt häufig zu Gast.

1788 Mehrere Monate in Volkstedt bei Rudolstadt, zusammen mit Frau von Lengefeld und ihren beiden Töchtern.
Aus Friedrich Schiller, Eine Biographie von Marie Haller (Nevermann):
1788 Die nächsten Monate blieb der Kontakt mit Charlotte und Caroline ausschließlich auf Briefe beschränkt. Er hatte die Schwestern fast täglich gesehen und bald schon bemerkt, dass er beide liebte. 22. Februar 1790 Trauung mit Charlotte von Lengefeld in der Dorfkirche von Wenigenjena.
Ein Höhepunkt im Wettbewerb der Berlinale war Die geliebten Schwestern (170 Minuten) von Dominik Graf. Wenn der “Liebesfilm” im Sommer in die Kinos kommt, soll er etwa um 30 Minuten kürzer sein. Schade, das “Trio d’Amore” wird von so grandiosen Darstellern verkörpert: Florian Stetter ist Friedrich Schiller und war noch ein zweites Mal im Wettbewerb vertreten. Er ist Pater Weber in Kreuzweg von Dietrich Brüggemann. Hannah Herzsprung ist Caroline und Henriette Confurius ist Charlotte.
Übrigens: Das ZDF plant das Drama Tannbach, einen dreiteiligen Film, der dort angesiedelt ist, wo einst die deutsch-deutsche Grenze verlief. Heiner Lauterbach spielt den Gutsbesitzer Georg von Striesow, seine Tochter spielt Henriette Confurius.

Once again, as often in the past, the Berlinale certified its reputation as an effective cultural bridge between nations.
Und Rons Bericht endete so:
The Berlinale does, indead, serve as a cultural bridge.
Ja, es war eine gute Berlinale. Jetzt, da ich bereits an Cannes denke – Cannes ohne Ron – , will ich noch mal kurz eine Berlinale-Bilanz erstellen. Der Wettbewerb war sehenswert: vier deutsche Filme, drei hochinteressante Beiträge aus China und einen wunderbaren “Lieblingsfilm” aus den USA , nämlich Boyhood von Richard Linklater, ausgezeichnet mit dem Preis für die Beste Regie. Der Goldene Bär ging an China für Black Coal, Thin Ice von Diao Yinan.
Hiroshima, mon amour (1959) von Alain Resnais ist einer meiner “Lebensfilme”; mit dem Werk des Altmeisters habe ich die Filmkunst entdeckt, dazu kam noch der Däne Karl Theodor Dreyer. Von Alain Resnais, dem kühnen Romantiker, der fast schwebende Bilder schuf, wurde bei der Berlinale Aimer, boire et chanter (Life of Riley, 2013) gezeigt. Lieben, Trinken und Singen liegt ein Theaterstück von Alan Ayckbourne zugrunde, in dem drei befreundete Ehepaare vor allen Dingen die Frauen ein Theaterstück proben; die Damen sind großartig, die Bühnenbilder aus Stoffbahnen.
Den Alfred-Bauer-Preis für einen Film, der neue Perspektiven eröffnet, konnte Alain Resnais nicht mehr persönlich entgegen nehmen, er ist am 1. März 2014 im Alter von 92 Jahren in Paris gestorben. Mit Aimer, boire, et chanter sagen wir: Adieu, Bless You, Alain.
Übrigens: Bei der Berlinale 1998 bekam Alain Resnais einen Silbernen Bären for his outstanding contribution to contemporary film art for On connaît la Chanson (Das Leben ist ein Chanson).
In Die Zeit vom 6. März 2014 ist zum Tode des großen französischen Regisseurs Alain Resnais von Dominik Graf ein Nachruf abgedruckt: “Ihr habt noch nichts gesehen.“

Cannes 2014, May 14-25

Jane Campion was the first female filmmaker to win the Palme d’Or in Cannes. 1993 for The Piano. This year Jane Campion from New Zealand becomes the first female director to act as Cannes jury president. On May 12, ARTE will be showing two of Jane Campion’s films: An Angel at My Table (1990) and Holy Smoke! (1999).
There will be a great Competition in Cannes: Jean-Luc Godard with Adieu au Langage (Goodbye to Language). Does that mean spoken language may be out – terrible – “No walk-and-talk any more” – in life and in film. There are further big names entering the Competition: Mike Leigh and Ken Loach, I love them both. From Canada David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars and from Atom Egoyan The Captive. Von MIchael Hazanivicius — Oscar winner, he created the wonderful The Artist — is in Cannes with The Search.
Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Winter Sleep (Turkey, Co-production with Germany) maybe the longest entry of the competition: 169 Min. Andrei Zvyagintsev’s Leviathan (Russia) would be a film for Ron, because Andrei is retelling the story of Hiob. Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne are in Cannes with Deux jours, une nuit. I like the work of the Dardenne-Brothers. Also the film about Yves-Saint-Laurent Saint Laurent from Bertrand Bonello will be a treat. And what’s about the opening? It will be Grace de Monaco by the “Wunderkind” Xavier Dolan starring Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly. Probably the Monégasque dynasty won’t be amused.

Berlinale 2008 – The Beauties of Leipzig
Gunther Scholz’s Sag mir, wo die Schönen sind (The Beauties of Leipzig) (2007) programmed in the Panorama, similarly chronicles the lives of nine women. Back in 1989, when the film begins, the women were 20-year-old “beauties” – and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) still existed. Today, they are all around 40, but still beautiful… Gerhard Gäbler, a student and amateur photographer, hit upon the idea of a photo documentary project and asked the candidates if they would agreed to sitting. Eighteen years later, when Scholz and Gäbler visited these women again, they agreed to bring the stories of their lives up to the present. And that’s what makes The Beauties of Leipzig a warmly human viewing experience – in addition to being an important social document.
Feitagabend, den 25. April 2014 wurde im RBB Fernsehen um 0:00 Sag mir, wo die Schönen sind von Gunther Scholz gezeigt. Leider nicht in der ARD-Mediathek zum Nachschauen verfügbar. Denn der Dokumentalfilm von der “Miss Leipzig”-Wahl 1989 ist seeehr sehenswert!

Nina Hoss auf ARTE

Am 23. und 24. April 2014 wurden auf ARTE Filme mit Nina Hoss gezeigt. Am 23.4. um 20:15 das Drama Fenster zum Sommer (2011) von Hendrik Handloegten.
Eine junge Frau erwacht in der Vergangenheit. Sie versucht nun, das Schicksal zu beeinflussen. Von Nina Hoss war ich sehr beeindruckt; von ihren Partnern ebenfalls: Mark Waschke und Lars Eidinger.
Ron war immer sehr angetan vom Talent und der Ausstrahlung von Nina Hoss. Am 24.4. um 2.00 Uhr zeigte ARTE das Drama Jerichow (2008) von Christian Petzold und wieder mit Nina Hoss.
In KINO – German Film No: 94 (2009) schrieb Ron Holloway:
A hit at the 2008 Hof festival, Christian Petzold’s Jerichow arrived fresh from the Venice film festival. The title refers to an East German town located not far from Wittenberge on the Elbe River, where Petzold’s previous film Yella (2007) (see KINO 89) had been shot […] Christian Petzold is recognized as a leading “auteur” in the current German New Wave and owes some of his fame to the Hof Film Festival. Nearly all of his films have been screened here. — Jerichow is nominated for a Lola – Best German Film 2009.

Kreuzweg in der Berlinale

Ostersonntag war gerade die richtige Zeit, um über Anna und Dietrich Brüggemanns Kreuzweg (Stations of the Cross) nachzudenken.
Wieder mit seiner Schwester Anna Brüggemann als Co-Autorin, entstanden die vierzehn Kreuzweg-Stationen (Jesus auf dem Weg nach Golgatha) und berichten von der Leidensgeschichte der opferbereiten 14-jährigen Maria. Im Süden Deutschlands in einer tiefgläubigen katholischen Familie aufgewachsen, gemäß der Lehren der streng katholischen Pius-Bruderschaft, unterstützt von der Mutter, ist Maria bereit, sich reinen Herzens zu opfern, um ihren kleinen, stummen Bruder Johannes von seiner Stummheit zu erlösen. Kein Arzt konnte helfen.
Die Titel der Kreuzweg-Stationen sind jeweils eingeblendet, die Kamera (Alexander Sass) ist fast statisch; das verlangt höchste Konzentration der Darsteller. Die wird auch geleistet, vor allem von Lea van Acken (Maria) und Florian Stetter (Pater Weber). In der Berlinale 2014 war Florian Stetter gleich zweimal zu sehen: In Die geliebten Schwestern von Dominik Graf ist er der
leidenschaftliche Friedrich Schiller. Für Kreuzweg, dieser Tragödie vom religiösen Fundamentalismus, erhielten die Geschwister Brüggemann den Preis für das Beste Drehbuch.

Chanukka in der Pessachwoche

Als ich Mittwoch, den 16. April 2014 abends gegen 23 Uhr nach der Achtung-Berlin-Preisverleihung am Alex in die S-Bahn stieg, fragte mich ein älteres Ehepaar sehr freundlich, ob die Bahn zum Zoo fahre.
Da ich in Englisch angesprochen wurde – und es klang nach amerikanischem Englisch –, erkundigte ich mich, woher das Ehepaar käme. Aus Israel. Meine Reaktion: Ich bin Schauspielerin und habe die Anne Frank gespielt und das Chanukka-Fest in hebräisch gestaltet und gesungen: Maos zur Jeschuhati … Dann haben wir drei das Chanukka-Lied gemeinsam gesungen und uns danach herzlich verabschiedet.
Chanukka wird im Dezember gefeiert und heißt Einweihung an die Wiederaufnahme des Jerusalemer Tempeldienstes. Das Fest dauert 8 Tage. Jeden Tag wird am achtarmigen Chanukka-Leuchter ein Licht angezündet. Das Lichterfest.

Retrospektive Robert Bresson

Im Berliner Arsenal – Institut für Film und Videokunst e. V. läuft vom 11. April bis zum 7. Mai 2014 eine Retrospektive über den französischen Filmemacher Robert Bresson.
There are some filmmakers whose names evoke an idea even if their films are unfamiliar. “Bresson” stands for asceticism, rigorous mise-en-scene, reduced filmic methods and a propensity for spiritualism and mysticism. Our extensive April retrospective of the oeuvre of the French filmmaker Robert Bresson will enable viewers to make the link between this label, which is detached from the films, and the aesthetic experience in the cinema. They will be able to discover and scrutinize the complexities that lie in the reduction, as well as the fact that Bresson’s cinema is also an expression of aesthetic and political resistance and the extent of its reach into the present …
Ronald Holloway was the first Catholic to complete a doctorate in Evangelical Theology at the University of Hamburg, writing on the films of Carl Dreyer, Ingmar Bergman, and Robert Bresson. He teaches cinema for the University of Maryland Overseas Program and conducts film seminars for the Evangelische Akademien in Germany.

Jubiläum Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen

Die Internationalen Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen feiern vom 1. bis 6. Mai 2014 ihren 60. Geburtstag. Im Rathaus Oberhausen wird es eine Ausstellung geben und an einer Diskussionsrunde werden Festivalgründer Hilmar Hoffmann und der Gründer des Berlinale Forums Ulrich Gregor teil nehmen.
