Gerstern, am 13. September 2013 ist Otto Sander gestorben; er wurde 72 Jahre alt.
Ron mochte ihn. Wir sahen fabelhafte Filme mit ihm, Die Blechtrommel von Volker Schlöndorff und auf der Schaubühne. Otto Sander gehörte zum Peter-Stein-Ensemble. Ich erinnere mich besonders an Der Himmel über Berlin (1987) (Sky over Berlin) von Wim Wenders. From KINO – German Film No: 26 (1987):
Austrian writer Peter Handke (his third collaboration with Wenders) contributed the bare bones of a screenplay. The story is simplicity itself: two angels, Daniel (Bruno Ganz) and Cassiel (Otto Sander), arrive in Berlin to visit this “incarnation of Germany”. They wander unnoticed ( only children can see angels) around this island-city split in two by a Wall, absorbing the thoughts of everyone they meet: the aged writer Homer (Curt Bois)…
For Sky over Berlin Wim Wenders won the Best Director prize at Cannes 1987. Dank an Otto Sander. Jetzt ist er im Himmel über Berlin als Engel Cassiel.

Das neue Gotteslob

Am 5. September 2013 präsentierte der Berliner Erzbischof Rainer Maria Kardinal Woelki bei Dussmann, dem KulturKaufhaus, das neue katholische Gesangbuch:”Gotteslob”.
Viele Gläubige hatte der Weg zu Dussmann geführt; vor der KulturBühne gab es keinen Sitzplatz mehr. Ab 1. Advent wird in allen katholischen Gemeinden aus dem neuen Gesangbuch gesungen und gebetet.
Die Freude, die es dem Kardinal bereitete, uns das neue Gotteslob zu überreichen, sprang auf die Anwesenden über. Dazu kam der so berührende Gesang des Kammerchors der St. Hedwigs-Kathedrale. Kardinal Woelki berichtete eingehend welche wohl bekannten Kirchenlieder werden wir wieder singen können und welche neu aufgenommen wurden. Der Kammerchor sang mit Liebe und voll Hingabe.
Musik live erleben – gemeinsam beten. Hätte Ron das erleben dürfen. Vielleicht ist er ja mit Cardinal Sterzinsky beisammen und beide hören uns zu.

Again a delightful idea to see a special preview in Filmkunst 66; this time, at September 4, 2013 the documentary Wer schön sein will, muss reisen by Rene Schöttler and Tine Wittler.
Regina stellte uns die Filmemacher vor, und die beiden bedankten sich wiederum herzlich bei der Produzentin, die ihnen mit Rat und Hinweisen zur Seite gestanden hatte.
It was a special evening. Tine und Rene waren etwa sechs Wochen in Mauretanien und lernten Land und Leute kennen, und wir lernen mit voller Erstaunen und mit Vergnügen. In dem Wüstenstaat ist eine Frau erst schön, wenn sie recht rundlich ist – also wird reichlich gefuttert. Unter den vielen Zuschauern war auch ein ganz besonderer Gast: Wafa M. EL Hassan, sie hatte in Mauretanien die Filmemacher begleitet, übersetzt und vor allem “Türen geöffnet”.

Das Meer am Morgen – Ein Kriegsdrama von Volker Schlöndorff

Calm at Sea (Das Meer am Morgen) fascinates with breathtaking authenticity, which is also the result of a convincing cast. The fresh-faced look of Leo-Paul Salmain as Guy Moquet and Ulrich Matthes’ distinctive portrait of the ambiguous Ernst Jünger stay in mind as expression of entirely different designs of living.
On August 31, ( 2013 ) I saw Das Meer am Morgen (La Mer a L’aube) (Frankreich/Deutschland 2011) on TV at Bayerischer Rundfunk. At the Berlinale 2012 in section Panorama I had seen this impressing master-piece for the first time and wrote about it also in KINO – German Film No: 103:
La Mer a L’aube ( Calm at Sea ) by Volker Schlöndorff is film-making craftsmanship without any flaws and faults.
Broadcasting Das Meer am Morgen in the context of President Joachim Gauck’s visit of the French village of Oradour-sur-Glane at September 4, 2013, was a decent act of TV programming. Joachim Gauck was the first German head of state to visit the site of the gruesome massacre by the Waffen-SS in 1944. It’s reflecting today’s intensity of French-German relations as it does the fact that a German director was allowed to make a film about the felonious execution of 150 civilian hostages by German troops in 1941. Among them the only 17 years old Guy Môquet – still today a patriotic icon in France.

Eine mörderische Entscheidung

Gestern, am 30. August, sah ich auf ARTE “Eine mörderische Entscheidung.”
Ich bin wieder so verzweifelt wie ich im September 2009 war, als Kundus bombardiert wurde. Ron war Anfang September 2009 so krank, dass wir nicht mehr miteinander diskutieren konnten. Die dramatische Dokumentation, Regie: Raymond Ley, gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Hannah schrieb Ley
auch das Drehbuch, hat mich so aufgewühlt, dass ich mich den ganzen Tag frage, wie konnte eine derart mörderische Entscheidung getroffen werden?
Die Rekonstruktion ist eindringlich, aufwühlend, da Matthias Brandt für die Aufgabe gewonnen werden konnte, Oberst Georg Klein zu verkörpern, der 2009 die Bombardierung der zwei Tanklaster in Afghanistan zuließ – anordnete. Raymond Ley konnte mit einem hervorragenden Team arbeiten. Um nur einen Schauspieler zu nennen: Axel Milberg als ein fiesen Berater; an der Kamera: Philipp Kirsamer.
Am 4. September wird Eine mörderische Entscheidung um 20:15 Uhr im Ersten gezeigt.

“Jerichow” (2008) by Christian Petzold

From KINO – German Film No: 94 (2009), Jerichow was one of the last reviews Ron Holloway wrote. I think, Ron and Christian Petzold knew each other. Some days ago, on August 24, I saw on TV BR Jerichow – ein Beziehungsdrama, ein großartiges Werk.
Among the highlights of Hof 2008 were German premieres by “Autoren” directors Christian Petzold’s Jerichow, fresh from the Venice film festival, scores as a reprise of his Wolfsburg (2003), the title this time referring to an East German town.
Both films star Nina Hoss and Benno Führmann in similar tales of unrequited love against a fatal background of death and betrayal. Jerichow will no doubt go down in film history as yet another exceptional screen adaptation of James M. Cain’s seminal novel The Postman Always Rings Twice ( published in 1934), a classic in the annals of American hardboiled crime literature. What makes Jerichow a pleasure to watch as it unfolds with a couple new twists. Instead of the Greek-American husband in Cain’s original, he’s a Turkish-German owner of a string of döner stands – played with zest and streak of arrogance by Hilmi Sözer, the discovery of the film.
Christian Petzold, recognized as a leading “auteur” in the current German New Wave, owes some of his fame to the Hof Film Festival. Nearly all of his films have been screened here. – Ron Holloway

Parajanov – A Requiem at St. Petersburg

“Dear Friends ! On behalf of the Board of Directors of the XXI International Film Festival ‘Festival of Festivals’, I am glad to welcome the guests and participants of the festival. […] The ‘Special Screening’ section this year will present a program of films made by director, scriptwriter, producer and actor Sergei Paradjanov…” – Alexander Mamontov, General Director, SPB IFF of “Festival of Festivals”
Eight Films were shown from Sergei Paradjanov (09.01.1924 – 21.07.1990) and two times Parajanov – A Requiem by Ron Holloway. The interview documentary portrait of Sergei Parajanov features 19 excerpts from eleven of his films and was produced by Dorothea Holloway of KINO Productions in co-production with Ö-Film, Frank Löprich/Katrin Schlösser.
The 16mm film was completed without the benefit of state, cultural, or television funding of any kind. In this sense, Sergei Paradjanov can be viewed as the true author of his own portrait.

Ron Holloway was awarded the prestigious Sergei Parajanov Museum Award during the 2006 Golden Apricot Film Festival in Yerevan.

Mostra Internationale d’Arte Cinematografica, Venezia: Parajanov – A Requiem opens the Windows to Images section at Venice. It has been invited to the Filmfest München, the AFT (American Film Institute), to Film Festivals in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., to the Montreal World Film Festival, to the international film festivals in Vancouver, Mill Valley, Denver, and Chicago, the Viennale, Istanbul, the Golden Horse Film Festival in Taipei, among other festivals.

In KINO – German Film & International Reports hat Ron über Parajanov berichtet u. a. in den Nummern: 29 (1988), 30 (1988), 55 (1994), 56 (1994). Deborah Young schrieb in KINO No. 61, im Jahre 1996 über Parajanov – A Requiem. Glückwunsch, Andreas Dresen!

Zu den Lieblingssendungen im Fernsehen gehört für mich “Stilbruch” des RBB (Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg). Und in “Stilbruch”wurde am 15. August zum 50. Geburtstag von Andreas Dresen klug und kenntnisreich berichtet.
Ron liebte die Filme von Andreas Dresen. Aus KINO-German Film No: 85 (2006):
Andreas Dresen’s Sommer vorm Balkon is the box office hit of the new season. Thanks to Dresen’s hand with actors and nonprofessionels, Andreas Höfer’s free-wheeling hand-camera, Pascal Comelade’s sparkling musical score –- and, of course, the deft scriptwriting talents of Berlin chronicler Wolfgang Kohlhaase. – Ron Holloway
In KINO haben wir gerne über Andreas Dresen berichtet, so in in den Ausgaben 71,72,77, 93, 101 und 103. Im Jahre 2012 wurde Andreas Dresen der Regine-Hildebrandt-Preis verliehen für sein Vermögen, das Leben der Menschen in den neuen Bundesländern mit Realismus, Humor und Poesie darzustellen. Auch im Jahr 2012 wurde Andreas Dresen zum Verfassungsrichter im Land Brandenburg ernannt. Auf Vorschlag von Bundeskulturstaatsminister Bernd Neumann wurde der der mit Filmpreisen ausgezeichnete Regisseur 2013 einstimmig zum neuen Vorsitzenden des DEFA-Stiftungsrates gewählt. Die Stiftung, 1998 gegründet, kümmert sich um die Bewahrung der Filme der staatlichen DDR-Filmgesellschaft DEFA.

Egon Bahr: Erinnerungen an Willy Brandt

Am 14. August kam Egon Bahr (geb. 1922) – Journalist, faszinierender Politiker, Berater von Willy Brandt – in die Hansabibliothek, Berlin und gab eine unvergessliche Geschichtsstunde.
Bahr las nicht aus seinem Buch Das mußt Du erzählen. Erinnerungen an Willy Brandt. (Ullstein), sondern sprach frei, fesselnd, voller Ernst nicht ohne Humor zu den sehr, sehr zahlreich erschienenen Zuhörern. Immer mehr Stühle mussten “dazu gestellt” werden. Solche Geschichtsstunden sind selten.

Roman Polanski

Roman Polanski wird am 18. August 2013 80 Jahre. Aus O. is for Oberhausen – Weg zum Nachbarn, Oberhausen 1979:
Polanski, Roman. Poland/France. Born 1933 in Paris
His metier is the moral parable – the bizarre, surreal, grotesque, absurd theme suitable to the genre of the short feature. Beginning as an actor in film and theatre, Roman Polanski appeared in Andrzej Wajda’s Generation (1954) and than scored an international hit with Two Men and a Wardrobe (1958); it appeared at the same time as the heralded “black series” in Polish documentary and the Lenica-Borowczyk experimental films. Like many Polish filmmakers, Jan Lenica in particular, Polanskis shares a respect for Beckett and recognizes the humorous side of the absurd and the surreal in his curious treatises on human behavior. The shorts reveal a narrow world of repression without pity and paved the way for his psychological, Hitchcockian thrillers upon leaving Poland. Other parables: When Angels fall (1959) and Mammals (1963) in Poland, followed by a similar study of pent-up emotions and sexual tensions among a trio on a holiday boat in the feature Knife in the water (1962), and than the short The fat and the lean (1963) in France.
