KINO! 2007 – New Films from Germany at MoMA

Once again, from 1-14 November 2007, the Museum of Modern Art drew crowds to the retrospective KINO! 2007: New Films from Germany. As in previous years, Larry Kardish, senior curator at MoMA, presented a balanced program that offered an overview of German productions from the last year in the field of shorts, documentaries, and features by emerging and established filmmakers.

Phillip Bergson’s Festival Marathon 2007

8th goEast – Festival of Central & East European Film 2008

Estonia was a double winner at the 8th goEast – Festival of Central and Eastern European Film in Wiesbaden (9-15 April 2008), with Kadri Kousaar’s feature debut Magnus awarded the Golden Lily for Best Film and the FIPRESCI Critics Prize. The international jury, headed by German producer Eberhard Junkersdorf, praised the film for “its depiction of a youngster’s quest for stability in a society unable to provide him with firm ground to stand on.”

German Films at 7th Tribeca Film Festival 2008

Back in 2002, Robert de Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff founded the Tribeca Film Festival as a response to the aftermath of 9/11 with the mission to revive the devastated neighborhood. Now in its 7th year, the festival draws huge crowds and has become a landmark not only in the Manhattan cultural scene, but also on the worldwide festival circuit. Read the rest of this entry »

Film Scores of Dmitry Shostakovich

Ask any Russian scholar who was the greatest Soviet film composer, and you’re asking for a bare-knuckle fist-fight. The list quickly boils down to three: Dmitry Shostakovich (1906-1975), Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1951), and Aram Khachaturian (1903-1978) – with Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) thrown in on the side because he was always criticizing Shostakovich for lowering himself to work on pedantic Soviet movies.
